Bone Broth Diet: Does it Really Work?

What is the Bone Broth Diet?

Simply stated, the bone broth diet is a seven-day gut reset that floods your system with the most nutritious foods on the planet, including 1 qt of bone broth per day.  Clean eating, elimination of inflammatory and processed foods, and an abundance of bone broth will keep your tummy full and your body feeling light.  The purpose is not to starve your body of the nutrients it needs, but rather to flood your system with the most nutrient-dense foods available.  While this may seem counterintuitive, think of a well-oiled machine.  It, too, runs smoothly when given plenty of high-quality oil and fuel so it can perform the simplest or most complex task with ease.

Why bone broth?

There is a reason why your grandma always cooked up a pot of chicken soup when you were filling ill, and it wasn’t for the noodles.  For centuries, bone broth has been used by grandmothers and physicians alike to help heal you from the inside out.  By slowly simmering the bones, meat, tendons, ligaments, and feet of an animal you are able to transfer their nourishing benefits into an easily digestible liquid combination of collagen, gelatin, essential amino acids and minerals.

Bone broth is known for its ability to detoxify your liver and help rid your entire body of toxins.  It simultaneously adds collagen to your cells, with some even noticing a glow to their skin.  Most importantly, bone broth heals and seals your gut.  With about 70% of your immune system located in your gut, poor gut health is linked to hormone imbalance, eczema and other skin-related diseases, autoimmune diseases (including arthritis), anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, and diabetes to name a few.  Bone broth increases absorption of nutrients while also creating the perfect environment for your gut flora to flourish.  Because bone broth is naturally anti-inflammatory, with regular consumption you might also shed weight.

What Foods to Eat on the Bone Broth Diet

In a lot of ways, the bone broth diet is easier to follow than most diets. It’s less about deprivation and more about a lifestyle change. While it may seem unusual at first, once you start to reap the benefits of clean eating, you will notice that you can actually feel the difference when you eat processed foods.

What foods can you eat on the bone broth diet? If you’re familiar with the paleo style of eating, you’ll likely find that the bone broth diet fairly easy to assimilate. If you haven’t followed a paleo diet before, let’s discuss the basics.

The basics include eating whole foods and staying away from anything processed.

The following foods can be eaten in abundance:

  • Responsibly raised meat, fish, and eggs
  • Organic vegetables
  • Organic fruits, nuts, and seeds
  • Healthy fats and oils, herbs, and spices

Basically, the paleo diet is to only eat foods that were available by hunting and gathering. By nature, the paleo diet is heavy on proteins, fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats.

Foods to avoid on the Bone Broth Diet

Since the bone broth diet follows the paleo diet closely, the list of foods to avoid are the same. Even if you don’t normally follow a paleo diet, when you’re participating in the bone broth diet, you’ll want to avoid eating dairy, legumes, grains, alcohol, and added sugars. Yes, you can drink black coffee on the bone broth diet, but we urge you to try replacing your morning cup of coffee with an extra cup of bone broth! You’ll be surprised at how naturally energized you feel, and there’s no post-coffee crash, since you’re fueling your body with vitamins, minerals, and protein.

Benefits of the Bone Broth Diet

Now that we’ve talked about what the bone broth diet is, let’s talk about why you should give it a try, and outline some of the reasons it is so beneficial for your body.

  1. Increased immunity

Did you know that 70% of your immune system is located in your gut?  By focusing on nutrient dense foods like bone broth, you will be able to fully strengthen and support your body’s immune system naturally.  Chock full of essential vitamins, minerals, and protein, bone broth is an amazing tool to increase your body’s intake of important nutrients. Combine that with the gut-healing benefits of collagen and the beneficial amino acids that bone broth provides, and you’ve got a wealth of immune boosters with nourishing sip.

  1. Weight loss

While weight loss is not the primary goal of this gut reset, many people will experience a weight loss at the end of your week.  When you’re fueling your body with wholesome, nutrient dense foods, and avoiding inflammatory foods, processed sugars, and alcohol, your body will naturally begin to shed some unwanted pounds. Bone broth is naturally anti-inflammatory and promotes detoxification.  Inflammation is known to be a contributing factor to a myriad of chronic health issues, including aging.  Arginine and Glycine both have strong anti-inflammatory effects, and glycine aids in the digestion of food by stimulating the production of stomach acids.  Glycine is also integral to boosting glutathione, which ads in the body’s detoxification process.  The difference between the bone broth diet and many conventional diets, is that you’re shedding pounds through nourishment, not deprivation. When you lose weight by making a healthy, sustainable lifestyle change, you’ll likely find that the weight is easier to keep off – and most importantly, that your body FEELS better, because you’re eliminating unhealthy processed foods and nourishing your body with whole food nutrition.

  1. Boosts Digestion + Seals your gut lining

Bone Broth has been used for centuries to help boost gut health and digestion.  Known as liquid glue, it sticks to the lining of your gut to keep food from leaking out into your body.  The gut is composed of a series of cells.  Under stress, consuming too many processed foods, or taking antibiotics can cause these cells to spread apart and allow the particles to pass through them, which causes inflammation.  We have all heard the old adage, “you are what you eat”.  But, in the world of bone broth, we say “you are what you absorb”.  Bone broth helps boost digestion overall and reduce symptoms of digestion disorders.

  1. Good reset for diet

If you know that you’ve been neglecting your health and could use a dietary reset, the bone broth diet is a fantastic way to bring the focus back to nourishing whole foods and essential nutrients. The best thing about the bone broth diet is that it offers your body a reset, without letting it feel deprived. The list of foods you can eat on the bone broth diet is lengthy – with a few exceptions.
